Naama Tsabar: Estuaries: Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin

September 9 – 22, 2024
  • “I often hope for my work to be such a meeting point, for visitors to engage their body with objects and with one another, for a movement and expansion between different densities, material and sound, to exist in an ever-changing state.”
    —Naama Tsabar
  • On the occasion of Estuaries, Naama Tsabar’s ongoing solo exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof–Nationalgalerie Staatchliche Museen zu Berlin, Kasmin presents a focused selection of works from the exhibition exclusively online. Curated by Ingrid Buschmann, Tsabar’s first institutional exhibition in Germany comprises over twenty works that correspond with each other both visually and sonically, including from the series Works on Felt, Inversions and Melodies of Certain Damage. The installation investigates the artist’s unique practice, which transcends traditional boundaries, blending sculpture, music, performance and architecture.

During Berlin Art Week 2024, Tsabar will stage five performances before the exhibition closes on September 22. In collaboration with musicians and performers from New York, Los Angeles, and Berlin, all of whom are women or non-binary, Tsabar will activate the works on display, transforming the exhibition space into a sound space where viewers can move freely around the performers. Tickets are required.

  • “In these interactive works, Tsabar reveals hidden spaces and systems, redefines gendered narratives, and changes the act of viewing from a moment of passive contemplation to one of active engagement, characterized by intimate, physical, and transgressive audience experience.”

    Naama Tsabar

Naama Tsabar’s (b. 1982) practice fuses elements from sculpture, music, performance and architecture. Her interactive works expose hidden spaces and systems, reconceive gendered narratives, and shift the viewing experience to one of active participation. Tsabar draws attention to the muted and unseen by propagating sound through space and sculptural form. Between sculpture and instrument, form, and sound, Tsabar’s work lingers on the intimate, sensual, and corporeal potentials within this transitional state. Collaborating with local communities of female-identifying and gender non-conforming performers, Tsabar writes a new feminist and queer history of mastery.
