Keith Sonnier: Louisiana Suite
November 21, 2019 – January 11, 2020 509 West 27th Street, New York Kasmin is delighted to announce an exhibition of seminal work by Keith Sonnier at the gallery’s flagship space in Chelsea, New York, on view between November 21, 2019, and January 11, 2020. Large-scale works from the ongoing series Ba-O-Ba, which the artist began in 1969, utilize large panes of glass and Sonnier’s signature neon tubing in an abstract composition that forms a confluence between the sculpture and the gallery wall and floor. The neon’s linear quality allows the artist to “draw in space” with light and color, transcending the traditional limits of sculpture in an idiosyncratic visual style now inextricably associated with Sonnier. Based on the Greek mathematical theory of the Golden Ratio, the works are quintessential examples of Sonnier’s ability to masterfully synthesize architecture and light, speaking to a formal inventiveness that has defined nearly six decades of work. Elemental
September 26 – November 2, 2019 297 Tenth Avenue, New York Kasmin is pleased to announce Elemental, an exhibition comprised of minimalist and post-minimalist painting and sculpture that lays bare the foundational components of these consecutive 20th-century movements. Spanning 1963–1981, each work in the exhibition demonstrates a conceptually robust reduction of both form and content, drawing renewed attention to the nuances of the artistic process, the visceral potential of materials, and the organizational structure of a composition. By way of geometric abstraction, singular motifs, monochromatic palettes and the embracing of repetition, this seminal group of artists eschewed the gestural individualism of mid-century Abstract Expressionism and paved the way for a new understanding of art-making. Jan-Ole Schiemann: A Different Pose
March 7 – May 4, 2019 297 Tenth Avenue, New York Kasmin is pleased to present A Different Pose, the gallery’s first solo exhibition of new paintings by Cologne-based artist Jan-Ole Schiemann. Schiemann’s paintings are grounded in both gestural abstraction and the history of 20th-century animation, aspects that combine to imbue his work with a rare sense of kinetic energy. Half-formed, simultaneously disappearing and reappearing shapes suggest that somewhere amidst the lines, there are figures tumbling, colliding, or fighting obscured by clouds of smoke. As a result of Schiemann’s meticulous, layered application of charcoal, oilstick, ink and acrylic, the works have the illusion of both a sculptural and a digital depth. The artist’s first solo exhibition at Kasmin will be comprised of new medium-scale and monumental paintings, as well as the debut of a new series of works on paper. View More -
Matvey Levenstein
January 24 – March 2, 2019 Kasmin is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Matvey Levenstein, on view at 293 Tenth Avenue between January 24 - March 2, 2019. Levenstein’s work depicts scenes from his life on the North Fork of Long Island and explores themes of history and representation. The paintings speak to the relevance of Romanticism in the 21st Century, and act as quiet meditations on the immigrant experience filtered through the most traditional painterly genres: the landscape, the still life and the portrait. Imbued with a distinctly literary sensitivity and sincerity, the exhibition brings together a selection of new works ranging in size and materials, including large sumi ink drawings, and smaller, delicate works realized on linen, copper, and wood. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. View More -

Beginning in the 1960s, Warhol carried a camera with him almost constantly, obsessively documenting both his personal life and the daily goings on in his studio, The Factory. These images, artworks in their own right, also acted as visual references and formed the basis of many of the artist’s drawings, silkscreens, and paintings. Highlighting the integral contribution of photography to his art-making process, Warhol referred to his Polaroid Big Shot camera (which he purchased in 1970) as his “pencil and paper.” View More -
