Ali Banisadr: Recent Acquisitions

Kasmin is delighted to announce two acquisitions of work by Ali Banisadr by North American institutions: a large-scale painting Language of the Birds, 2018, by The Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C; and seven works of ink on paper titled SEVEN Series, 2017, by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia.

Ali Banisadr’s densely populated paintings are influenced by the artist’s perception of sound as inextricably linked to color and form. Drawing on childhood experiences of the Iran-Iraq war in his native Tehran (where explosions and other aural disturbances were commonplace) as well as his extant synesthesia, Banisadr works painstakingly and intuitively to build complex compositions that exude a vitality at once turbulent and celebratory. The work entering the Hirshhorn’s permanent collection was given by the Noshirvani family in 2019.

Ali Banisadr lives and works in New York City. The artist has recently been the subject of solo museum exhibitions at the Museo Stefano Bardini & Palazzo Vecchio, Florence; the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum, Hartford, CT; the Benaki Museum, Athens; Gemäldegalerie, Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, and Het Noordbrabants Museum, Den Bosch, Netherlands. In 2013, his work was included in “Love Me/Love Me Not, Contemporary Art from Azerbaijan and its Neighbors,” The 55th International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale, and “Expanded Painting,” Prague Biennale 6.

Banisadr’s work is included in significant public collections worldwide, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; the British Museum, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Het Noordbrabants Museum, Den Bosch, Netherlands; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum der Moderne, Salzburg; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT.

Announcing Robert Indiana: The Source, 1959–1969

Kasmin announces Robert Indiana: The Source, 1959–1969, a focused survey of the transformative decade in which Indiana established his unique artistic language, achieving wide recognition and cementing his place as an icon of American art. Featuring over 20 paintings drawn exclusively from the artist’s personal collection as endowed by Indiana to the Star of Hope Foundation, the exhibition will also include an example from the artist’s first edition of LOVE sculptures, conceived in 1966 and executed between 1966 and 1968, and a vitrine display of archival materials including some of the artist’s journals. This exhibition marks Kasmin’s first collaboration with the Star of Hope Foundation, which was established by the artist in his lifetime, and the gallery’s eighth solo Indiana exhibition since 2003. Robert Indiana: The Source, 1959–1969 will be on view at 509 West 27th Street, New York, from February 27–March 29, 2025.
