Kasmin congratulates Diana Al-Hadid on her election to the National Academicians in the Class of 2024. She joins a group of 28 artists and architects elected this year, including Amy Sherald, Sheila Pepe, and others, each recognized for their contributions to contemporary American art and architecture.Current Academicians include Judith Bernstein (NA 2016) and Joel Shapiro (NA 2012), and past members include Jane Freilicher (ANA 1980, NA 1982), Robert Motherwell (ANA 1990), George Rickey (NA 2001), and James Rosenquist (NA 2013).The annual nomination and election of National Academicians dates back to the National Academy’s founding in 1825 as the United States’ first artist- and architect-led organization. New Academicians are nominated and elected by the current members of the National Academy, a growing community of no more than 450 artists and architects across the country.“We’re thrilled to welcome this exceptional class of newly elected Academicians. As the Academy embarks on an exciting new chapter, the induction of these twenty-eight artists and architects—whose diverse and ambitious work captivates across various mediums—powerfully reaffirms our commitment to celebrating bold and visionary contributions to contemporary art and architecture.” – Said Gregory Wessner, Executive Director, National Academy of Design. In addition to providing leadership and vision for the National Academy and its programs and exhibitions, Academicians are also invited to donate a representative work – called the Diploma Work – to the National Academy’s collection. With more than 8,000 paintings, sculpture, works on paper, architectural drawings and models and more, the National Academy’s collection has been assembled almost entirely through the donations of its artists and architect members. It is one of the most significant collections of American art and architecture in the world.

Including new paintings, works on paper, and a restaging of her iconic Signature Piece (1986), this will be Bernstein’s first New York solo exhibition since the acquisition of her major charcoal screw drawing Horizontal (1973) by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2023. The exhibition anticipates the artist’s major museum retrospective at Kunsthaus Zurich in 2026. -

Emil Sands: Salt in the throat
January 9 – February 15, 2025 297 Tenth Avenue, New YorkFor his debut exhibition in Chelsea, Emil Sands explores shifting codes of human behavior and the influence of the surrounding world in a suite of new paintings. In the open air of a seascape or the shadows of a dense forest, Sands’ settings act as stage sets in which his cast of characters perform, reading one another's subtle gestures. As he exaggerates these figures and invites viewers to extrapolate on their relationships, Sands' considered brushwork and intuitive use of color combine to construct narratives filled with humor and pathos.
