Kasmin congratulates Diana Al-Hadid on her election to the National Academicians in the Class of 2024. She joins a group of 28 artists and architects elected this year, including Amy Sherald, Sheila Pepe, and others, each recognized for their contributions to contemporary American art and architecture.Current Academicians include Judith Bernstein (NA 2016) and Joel Shapiro (NA 2012), and past members include Jane Freilicher (ANA 1980, NA 1982), Robert Motherwell (ANA 1990), George Rickey (NA 2001), and James Rosenquist (NA 2013).The annual nomination and election of National Academicians dates back to the National Academy’s founding in 1825 as the United States’ first artist- and architect-led organization. New Academicians are nominated and elected by the current members of the National Academy, a growing community of no more than 450 artists and architects across the country.“We’re thrilled to welcome this exceptional class of newly elected Academicians. As the Academy embarks on an exciting new chapter, the induction of these twenty-eight artists and architects—whose diverse and ambitious work captivates across various mediums—powerfully reaffirms our commitment to celebrating bold and visionary contributions to contemporary art and architecture.” – Said Gregory Wessner, Executive Director, National Academy of Design. In addition to providing leadership and vision for the National Academy and its programs and exhibitions, Academicians are also invited to donate a representative work – called the Diploma Work – to the National Academy’s collection. With more than 8,000 paintings, sculpture, works on paper, architectural drawings and models and more, the National Academy’s collection has been assembled almost entirely through the donations of its artists and architect members. It is one of the most significant collections of American art and architecture in the world.

The Late Collages
of Dorothea TanningThe second solo exhibition of work by Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) at Kasmin concentrates on her late-career collages from the 1980s and 1990s. Celebrating the multidisciplinary spirit of her work, Encyclopedia: The Late Collages of Dorothea Tanning delves into the artist’s universe where literary devices, from humor and irony to paradox and repetition, combine with her personal visual lexicon to inspire, as she once wrote, “Art as metaphor for language.” -

Jan-Ole Schiemann: If there was a letter for it
October 1 – 25, 2024 514 West 28th Street, New YorkKasmin presents Cologne-based painter Jan-Ole Schiemann’s (b. 1983) third solo presentation at the gallery, If There Was A Letter For It. On view will be new canvas paintings that index a careful process of gestural mark making, featuring Schiemann’s first series of paintings to incorporate oil paint. With oil, Schiemann intensifies the expression of velocity within his work, capturing a range of motion in thick gestural marks that glide across the canvas in assertive colorways. Returning to the grid as a guiding compositional strategy, Schiemann imparts a distinct geometric character in these paintings, expanding his singular visual vocabulary.
