Maverick art-dealer Alexander Iolas operated galleries in New York, Paris, Geneva and Milan from the 1950s through the 1980s. The gallery’s 2014 career-spanning exhibition devoted to Iolas gathered together works by artists whose careers he fostered at various points: William N. Copley, Max Ernst, Yves Klein, Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, Ed Ruscha, Dorothea Tanning and Andy Warhol, to name only a few. The accompanying catalogue – the first-ever English-language survey of Iolas’s life and career – reproduces archival texts and images, and assembles new reminiscences and interviews with a host of Iolas’s contemporaries, including Bob Colacello, Paul Cummings, Brooks Jackson, André Mourgues, Anthony D’Offay, and Harold Stevenson. Edited by Adrian Dannatt.
